Robberies

On Dec. 15, 2022, a vehicle was found beside one of our ELCA cottages.  When approached, an occupant said that he was just having a smoke.  When asked why he was here, he said he wanted to see if the lake was frozen on this side of the lake.  We later determined that he walked along the lake in front of a series of cottages before he left the area.  A well defined footprint is documented, as well as his licence number.

A person has been arrested involved in a series of Dysart robberies.  The following is from the internet.  The dates may not match up with this individual,  but still nice to know the police are servicing us well.

                                                        ..................................

A joint search warrant in Dysart et al saw police recover an estimated $45,000 in stolen property.

Haliburton Highlands OPP and City of Kawartha Lakes OPP say they searched an address on Trapper’s Trail on Dec. 14, arresting a 37-year-old Dysart et al man.

Officials say it comes after an “extensive investigation” into a series of break and enters and thefts in October.

The suspect’s charges include breaking and entering, possession of a firearm, and multiple counts of possessing stolen goods. He was held in custody for a court date on Dec. 15.

Police are trying to identify the owners of the stolen property, and anyone with information is asked to call 705 286-1431, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Signs

Some members may not have met Brian and Beth Wilson, who live on the island.  Brian has great

skills with wood, as the above sign shows.  You might want to check his web site:

Limestone dump

Very difficult getting large trucks to finish off our replenishing of limestone.  Wet leaves makes traction on hills difficult.  But one made it through.

Little library

Oct. 11 is the final day for the library.  If you want to get some books for the winter, that is the deadline.

There is a rumour that a Senior Citizens Sports Camp will be established at the end of the old Clarke road by the riffles.  Perhaps Super Dave Osborne's business?

A grasshopper goes into a bar and orders a beer.  The bartender says, "we have a drink named after you and you order a beer!"   The grasshopper says, "you have a drink called Stan?"

Lost Boat

This dock may have drifted from the southern part of Elephant Lake.  It is on the southern side of the north island, location of the Elephant Lake Cottage Association.  It is presently tied up.

Bear alert

Thursday nite a bear entered the porch (PH) by ripping the screen and ate some food. Last nite, it was seen coming back to the cottage and was chased away.  MNR has been notified and stated that if it persists a trap will be brought in.  Please don't leave food outside.

Dumps of limestone are being deposited to make repairs and preparing for next spring.

This winter there will be 4 cottages occupied full time. There are no plans on plowing the road.

Caution

A black bear has been spotted by several cottagers in the Guest Road area.  Please try to keep garbage away from areas a bear can access.

Fire

On Saturday afternoon 40 firemen from Highlands East and Haliburton fought a fire near Silver Springs on the west side of Elephant Lake.  A cottage was saved but a major part of the hill was burnt.  The cause was a tree falling on a power line.

Ice Road

Slush on the ice might have cut down snowmobile traffic, but a clear south ice road across the lake, up Africa Trail and along Clarke Rd exists.  No traffic from the north to the causeway.

With Family Day coming, the traffic may increase.

Historical Inclusion

ELCA has been informed that the western area of the Clarke Road past Africa Trail, which includes the hill known as Boston's Hill, is just a part of the road name and requires more completion.

This road was actually not part of the original cottage association.  Gord Carter, is the last remaining cottager who paid to have Carson Bamford push the road down to the end.  At their expense.  Thus a more complete description would be the Carter/Carson road, or the CC extension and the hill that intersects Africa Trail is still Boston's Hill.  Actually sounds pretty good.  Dmitry's corner would be approximately the mid point of the CC extension.

Glad to clear that up.  Thanks to Orange Crush.  Perhaps a ribbon cutting ceremony after SARS-2.

Now, the next challenge is the Healy excavation which does not have a common name.  Suggestions?

Sweat hill

The 14-17 inches of snow last week really cause difficulties on the hills of our association.  This is especially true of the road from Africa Trail to the end of Clarke.

One atv could not make it up the hill after repeated packing by skidoos.  Too much powder which would not compact.

So, one Resident decided to hand shovel a path for the wheel tracks of the ATV.  From the bottom to the top!

This hill is effectively known as "Boston's Hill"

Slush

The great depth of snow on the lake is a fantastic insulator.  Any cracks on the lake that bleed water are protected from freezing and thus produce slush.  Slush loves to slow snowmobiles and embrace them closely.

Road travel

Road can be driven by vehicles.  But mill hill is snow packed to ice and a bit slippery.  Four cottages occupied: 2 seasonal and 2 permanent residents.
