Less ice
Well, windy again last nite. Cottages checked and no problem seen. It is remarkable that with so many hydro lines running through the forest, that the trees manage to fall away from the lines. Go figure.
Remarkable disappearance of ice from much of the road.

One

Tusk Sign
Dysartetal does not look after road signs. They refer cases to the County. So thanks Dysart for getting a sign installed. Now retail trucks don't end up on our island. Those drivers know lots of curse words!

Really?
From the cottage journal:
Nov. 26, 2013. Skating on the south side of causeway. 3 1/2 inches ice.
(remember the good old days?)

Pothole assistance
One report of broken pipes in East Bay. All the seasonal cottagers in ELCA have gone, except for the
consistent winter visitors and the permanent residents.

Obituary
Hi gang. I got a nice email from Jeff about the owner of the small island at the south of the lake. I did not know Mr. Campbell personally, but knew the name. I did not know the island had a name. I wonder if it is registered through the Canada Permanent Committee on Geographic Names.
I was also told by someone that hydro was established on the island.
Thanks Jeff.
Hello John:
I hope all is well with you? I did not know if you had heard that Alex Campbell, owner of the little island, Passed away.
Here is a copy of the Obit.
Take care.
Jeff

Heavy Rain
The last two days have seen some heavy rain. Causeway hill was the worst hit. Expect 5 heavy downpours per summer. This was number ONE.

Nice road work
Dysart et al has done a great job on the road south of Tusk Trail. Great grading and applying gravel. Thanks guys. Cottagers really appreciate great roads.

Fire
This morning a brush fire was spotted from Elephant Lake Road and at first I was contacted because it may have been in our area. Quick inspection showed it was not here.
The fire was at Leafield, directly across the bay from East Bay. Three fire stations responded as well as EMS and a helicopter. The fire burned about 2 acres between a cottage and the lake. The feeling was an unattended camp fire.
It is very dry in the bush.

Culvert
One culvert on maple hill, installed in 2013, has slowly been lifted by frost heaving. Vehicular traffic has started to crush the culvert. The road can survive without this culvert, but it is nice to have during spring run off. We'll let a year pass before making a decision about removal or replacing.

Caution
This photo is at the bottom of Clarke Rd just at the 90 degree turn. Soft. It might be too much of a struggle for most vehicles to get in right now.

Road
Most of the road is in good shape. But still a few soft areas. A few more days of drying will make a good improvement.

One days work
With 55 spiles (taps) and 1 day of gathering, 27 gal. of sap resulted. It takes about 40 gal of sap to make 1 gal of syrup. Carrying pails in the bush through deep snow is only fun when the pancakes are ready to eat.

Warning ribbons
There is truck and other large vehicles cutting across Clarke Rd at 2 gates logging road.
Ribbons have been hung from both sides of the pass-through to warn traffic on Clarke Rd.

Sympathy?
Come on lake. Don't hide the unknown depth of your slush! Please!
Oh, well, lucky there is a partner who can come with a shovel and ease the machine out of the misery.
The lake is a gigantic 'fly trap' waiting for suckers! (like me, eh!) Mixed metaphor works well, eh.

New road and lake
It is difficult on the lake for snowmobiles. Snow is 'crazy deep' and a layer of slush below the snow means studs on the track needed for assistance. Several machines had problems getting off the lake on the weekend.
Road work on 'Riffles Road' which ended last fall with lots of loads of gravel heading to the north peninsula, has started again but through '2 gates logging road' as seen in the photo.
