Wind storm

From the island to Tusk Trail, this was the only tree down on the road after our wind storm.  In day light it is not a problem, but in the dark is becomes difficult.

No damage to cottages.  Cool.

Road to Riffles

The municipality has been asked to establish some signs at the fork of Clarke Rd and the newly established road that heads north to the riffles..

In the dark of night it might be difficult to see Clarke road as the curve and it would result in a person continuing in a straight line on the wrong road.  Besides, a 911 number will be necessary of a road name.

Apparently this 300 to 400 acres at the end of the road was obtained by bids for back taxes.

Mice

This fall has been very bad for mice.

In fact, in the 12 years that we have lived at the cottage, it is the worst.  They can get into everything.  One cottager has them nest and destroy an oven.  Another nested in the air intact of a snowmobile and was sucked into the engine (replace the piston!)

The best way to partially solve the problem is to set up a 5 gallon bucket, with a wire through a pop can with peanut butter on the can. Put plumbers antifreeze in the bucket, maybe 2 inches.  Make a ramp up to the top of the bucket.  The mice quickly drown.  In the cold of the winter the antifreeze will freeze, but it does not expand.   And no smell when you return next spring.

One cottager

got 19 mice over  weekend.

Upgrading 'old road'

A steady stream of dump trucks are applying gravel to the road leading to the riffles.  A lot of energy is going into this operation.

Upgrading old road

The fork in the road between the old and new road is taking on a new appearance.  The property at the very end of the old road and the extension to the riffles, between 300 and 400 acres has a new owner.

The owner wants the road brought up to standard, approximately 16 feet wide, with gravel.  It will go for 2.5 kilometres and take perhaps a month to complete. The surveying was done last month.

Updating

The 'little library' established by Michele the 'Librarian'
is now open.

"Terry MacLean's" cottage has a new for sale sign.

Survey markers

There are numerous survey markers starting from Tusk Trail and continuing up the road, through the 'old road' to the riffles.  A few years ago there was 300 acres that were for sale.  It seems that the area is being surveyed as well as the road.

Sign Post

The sign post at Tusk and Clarke has had some signs taken down.  There is a scattering of beer cans around the tree.
But, it looks like the signs higher up were safe.  Perhaps use a ladder if the signs are reposted.

First open water!

It may be a small opening, but it seems that it is almost time for heat and wind to start moving docks away from the cottages.

Escape to cottages

Several requests about ability to drive into ELCA territory.  Well, that is impossible at present.  Also, using a snowmobile or atv presents some problems on icy hills.

But, 911 Clarke is a good place to park and snowmobile into East Bay, or to walk into the cottage as this photo shows.

Mill Hill

Mill Hill is quite difficult due to ice.  Sliding off the road into the ditch or over the steep side is not so nice.  More difficult to get back up.
Not recommended to travel to the island.  Bring a shovel if you try.  Two vehicles had to use dirt from the ditch to get traction on the ice.  Yuk.

Maple syrup day 1

It's that time of year again.  Sap is pouring out on day 1.

Deep snow

Well, the last few days dumped about 10 inches of powder snow and drifted it with some wind.  Causeway hill that has an ice layer under the snow made it difficult for a snowmobile without studs to climb hills.
The pulling sled had to be disconnected to barely reach the top of the hill.  Yuk for living in the bush.

Family Day

Lots of snowmobiles on the weekend.   But no machines went down Guest Trail or onto the island.   That is nice.

Snow load on road

If you are planning on driving in, best to pack a shovel to be able to dig dirt from the side of the road to give your vehicle traction under the wheels.

The road has not been plowed and the photo below shows the difficulty of freeing the vehicle.

Snow wonderland

Incredible display of wet snow on the trees.  It lasted only one day before warming released the wet snow cover.

Lake has a thick layer of slush under the snow.  Waiting to 'eat' snowmobiles without studs.

Snow

About 12 inches of powdered snow on the ground.  Snowmobile trails have opened up and lots of traffic on the lake.
